The first phase of mitosis is prophase. During prophase the nuclear membrane disintegrates. Also chromosomes pair up and become chromatids, and spindle fibers form. The next phase is the metaphase. During the metaphase the chromatids line up in the center of the cell. Then the spindle fibers split the chromatids. Then the spindle fibers move each chromosome to opposite poles of the cell. Then comes the anaphase. During the anaphase the chromosomes finish moving to opposite ends of the cell. Also The cell is almost twice as long as it was in the prophase. The final phase of mitosis is telophase. During telophase nuclear membranes form around the chromosomes on opposite ends of the cell. Also the cell starts to split and the spindle fibers disappear.
